Shikotsu-Toya 5 Day Hiking Tour 2025

Posted

In October, guests joined us for a journey around Hokkaido’s most easily-accessible national park, Shikotsu-Toya National Park. They were able to enjoy some beautiful autumn colours, lakeside vistas and dramatic geothermal forces - all in one trip!

Here’s a collection of highlights from the journey. Thank you, as always, to our wonderful guests for joining us and, of course, a special thanks to guides Richard and Mitchy for leading our guests on this adventure.

Two hikers walk along a dirt path on a coastal hiking route. In the distance behind them, cliffs stretch out into the sea. It is a sunny day and the ocean reflects the blue sky. It is early autumn and fluffy pampas grass grows in the undergrowth around the hikers.
We begin by exploring the clifftop trails of Mt. Akaiwa in Otaru.
Two people take a log bridge over a stream in a forest.
Although this is our most beginner-friendly hiking tour, there's still adventures to be had!
A couple look out at the volcanic valley in Noboribetsu. A sign in Japanese reads "Noboribetsu Onsen Hell Valley".
At Noboribetsu Onsen, we see geothermal forces up close.

Note from the future:
We have since revamped the itinerary of this tour to focus more on the Shikotsu–Toya National Park. This was based on feedback from guests and guides on this tour, which we greatly appreciate!

Our new itinerary still covers highlights from this gallery, such as Nakajima Island, the Nishiyama–Kompira trail and Poroto Forest. It now includes more hikes in this region and less travel time.
