Cycle the perimeter of the beautiful Lake Toya, enjoying a landscape forged by volcanoes that still shape the area to this very day.
Hokkaido cycle touring at its best. An adventurous snapshot of Hokkaido’s wild landscapes, gastronomy and unique culture in 4 days traversing the Niseko mountains.
This cycling and cultural discovery tour explores the Shikotsu-Toya National Park, the closest National Park to Hokkaido’s capital city Sapporo. This easily accessible area offers plenty of opportunities for scenic cycling along with some challenging climbs. We visit Hokkaido’s must-see destinations of Lake Toya, Mount Usu and Niseko. Starting from the Pacific Ocean side of Hokkaido, we traverse the mountainous area of Niseko all the way to the Sea of Japan.
This tour is operated in conjunction with Cycling Japan.
Cycle the perimeter of the beautiful Lake Toya, enjoying a landscape forged by volcanoes that still shape the area to this very day.
Enjoy the sight of Hokkaido's very own "Mt. Fuji"! Mt. Yotei is a similar stratovolcano to the iconic Mt. Fuji, which in time has earned it the nickname "Ezo Fuji" which borrows from "Ezo", the former name for the island.
On this tour, you'll cycle past vast fields of wheat, potatoes, beans and more. This fertile belt provides delicious produce that is enjoyed by the residents of Hokkaido, and will be on your plate at dinner.
As we pass through this volcanic landscape, there is plenty of opportunity to soak in rejuvenating natural hot springs - perfect for those tired legs.
We meet at Lake Toya onsen village between 9:30 am and 10:00 am for introductions and bike fitting. We start our journey around Lake Toya on a peaceful lakeside path. We cycle clockwise around this impressive caldera lake, covering 30 km of scenic roads.
The volcanic origins of Lake Toya have created perfect conditions for local agriculture, which we observe as we pedal through the countryside. We explore the volcanic landscape by climbing the lower slopes of Mt. Usu and visiting Mt. Showa-shinzan, formed in 1943. Both mountains are part of the Toya-Usu UNESCO Global Geopark. Our day ends back at our hotel, where we can soak in the onsen hot-spring overlooking the lake.
Heading north from Lake Toya, we cycle through farming country with unobstructed views of Mount Yotei, often called Ezo-Fuji for its resemblance to Japan's famous Mount Fuji.
At the foot of Mount Yotei, we stop at a renowned natural spring - one of Japan's 100 Best Springs - where locals collect mineral-rich water. After filling our bottles, we continue cycling around Mount Yotei's northern edge through Kutchan Town, known for its potato farming.
Our day ends with a climb through Niseko resort town to reach our lodging at Konbu Onsen, situated at the foot of Mount Niseko-Annupuri.
Our final and most challenging cycling day includes three major climbs. Starting from Konbu Onsen, we climb towards Goshiki Onsen through the Niseko mountains. Near the pass at 800 m, we pause for morning tea before cycling between Mt. Iwaonupuri and Mt. Niseko-Annupuri. After descending to Kutchan Town, we enjoy the local specialty - potato udon noodles - for lunch.
The afternoon brings another scenic climb to Akaigawa village before our final push to Yoichi on the Sea of Japan (there's a van option for the last stretch). We celebrate our achievement before taking the train to Otaru, a historic port town, where we conclude our adventure with a farewell dinner.
Our tour finishes after breakfast today. We recommend that you explore the charming merchant town of Otaru at your own pace. The historic port's architecture and atmospheric canal district provide a perfect end to our cycling adventure. Regular trains connect Otaru to both Sapporo (30 minutes) and New Chitose Airport.

You will load your luggage into the support vehicle, so you only need to carry daily necessities when you ride. If you need to stop cycling at any point during the day, you are welcome to take a rest in the support vehicle. Please be aware that the number of seats may be limited depending on the number of people and the vehicle we use.
